After a stint in prison Glasgow man Brian had lost all hope of getting a job, but thanks to esg. he’s now turned his life around.
Born in the east end of Glasgow Brian, who is now 32, had always had a job ever since he left school. He’d enjoyed a number of successful roles before finding job satisfaction as a door to door utilities salesman.
But while his professional career was right on track things weren’t going well in his personal life. As well as being in a volatile relationship he was struggling to make ends meet. Things went from bad to worse and his problems culminated in him being arrested for burglary. Brian was sentenced to 18 months in prison.
Brian said: “As it was my first offence, I felt like my world had ended, I couldn’t believe I’d let things get this bad. To be honest, I wasn’t sure how I was going to survive in prison.”
Determined to make the most of his time away he enrolled onto an NVQ in English and computing. With good behaviour and willingness to learn, Brian was released last summer after just nine months.
Boosted by his new skills he resolved to turn his life around. But he knew that with a criminal conviction many employers might not look favourably on him.
Keen to help him out, his probation officer referred him to employment and skills specialists
esg. who were happy to help. Brian came in to their Bothwell Street office and was paired with job broker Alex Laing who worked with Brian to find out what his goals were and develop a step-by-step plan to get him there.
Alex told us: “I could see straightaway Brian was very bright and keen to find work. With all of his sales experience I knew we’d be able to get in touch with our network of employers to find him the perfect job.”
They worked on his CV and interview techniques and soon enough he had a number of interviews to attend. After a few knock backs he finally landed himself a sales job with Home Charity encouraging people to sign up to donate to various charities each month.
And how does Brian feel about his new role? “I’m completely made up. Not only have I got a job I really enjoy, I’m working to raise funds for charities so it’s very rewarding. Without Alex’s help I don’t think I would have found a job especially after coming out of prison. But the good news doesn’t stop there. Brian’s recently been nominated for a prize as he has exceeded his sales targets each month. And he’s moved into a flat by himself, so he’s very up beat about the future and enjoying getting his life back on track.
